Dog Days of Summer? Not at eduFire!

Dog Days of SummerConventional wisdom suggests that August is the slowest month of the year online. People are out on vacation and at the lake and generally pretty far away from their computers. Traffic on many websites slows to a crawl as people trade in their PC and office chair for a paperback book and beach chair.

But apparently not when it comes to eduFire.

We had an incredibly strong month of August at eduFire and it’s awesome to see, especially given that August is not only a lot time for the Web but also for anything having to do with education. Despite this we saw some fantastic growth last month. Here are some numbers highlighting our growth in August over July:

-The number of registered members to eduFire was up 33% in August
-The number of tutoring sessions and revenue distributed to tutors was up almost 50% in August
-Traffic to the site (measured in unique visitors and page views) was up over 25% in August

And these are monthly growth numbers which is amazing to me. On an annualized basis this would represent phenomenal growth.

In addition, we had lots of other cool things happen including the soft launch of a new platform (still working out some kinks but a great response so far from tutors and students), increased traffic in the forums, the launch of badges, calendar integration and some innovative new tutor welcome videos (two of favorites are here and here). What’s great is to see all of that happening during a month where in many other areas of the web not all that much gets done. :) As one of our tutors likes to tell me all the time, “Just wait until fall when people really start thinking about education again!”

We’re really excited about some of the stuff that’s going roll out in September and thank all of you who’ve been supporting us so far. It’s amazing to see the passion and enthusiasm that our tutors and students bring and to think about how we’re all going to play a part (I think a big part) in revolutionizing education. At the end of the day, eduFire is about all of you. It’s about people who come together to share their expertise and to become smarter. And to do so in ways that are empowering and innovative versus bureaucratic, stifling and status quo.

One of my commitments for the month of September is to blog a little more about what we’re trying to do here at eduFire and share more of the long-term vision. I’ve done this a little before and with some people individually but I’m looking forward to being a little more public with what we’d like to see eduFire become and what we think is at stake here. Have a wonderful rest of your Labor Day weekend (at least what’s left of it!) and I’ll look forward to seeing you on eduFire for Back to School time throughout the month of September!
