What happens when classrooms are replaced by learning ecologies?

Why do we need to understand the shift in education? Because they can learn and teach themselves anything they want to know without leaving home. When you move from a classroom structure to a community structure- the students become teachers AND learners and so do we. 21st Century teaching and learning is about shifting classrooms to learning ecologies.

Sheryl goes on to provide a few emphatic examples of this including the following video…made by a 7th grader. :)

Anyone can be a teacher and anyone can be a student…indeed that’s the world we’re moving into. A wealth of knowledge at your fingertips? Yup, we’re hoping to be part of the infrastructure that is making this happen.

  • I agree with this whole heartedly. While homeschooling I think I have learned more from my kids/students than they have learned from me.
  • Kids just love to show what they know. There's just no end to creativity when you're a kid, when the world is full of wonder.

    Children naturally use this learning instinct, and we hope (against hope sometimes) that by the time they emerge from the traditional k-12 environment that they haven't lost it.

    Returning to this innate curiosity about the world is what fascinates me about learning. The idea that once you've learnt all you have to learn about a subject, there are countless more subjects to turn to, each with their own particular points of interest and so on, ad infinitum.

    What I am trying to do in my workplace (as I'm duty bound to attend), is turn it in to much less a bureaucracy and more a learning environment. Social learning and collaborative tools are at the centre of this revolution.
